For bands · the reference page
Everything else.
The short version is one page back. This is the rest: the accounts, the smaller options, the tools, and your page on this site.
If a store is more than you need
- Ten items or fewer
- No store at all. A Stripe Payment Link per item, on your site or Linktree. Stripe takes the address and the money and sends the receipt. Sizes are a dropdown on the link. An hour, $0 a month.
- Rather not touch anything
- Big Cartel (free for five products, $15 a month for fifty) or Bandzoogle (a whole band site, $10 to $20 a month). Both import a Shopify CSV.
- Staying where you are
- Do the one-hour checklist anyway: your domain, your exports, your list, the pixels. It costs nothing and makes the choice yours later.
Whatever you pick, the platform fee is the small lever: how the shirt gets made is worth several times more per sale.
Every account you need
All free to open, all in the band’s name, with an email at the band’s domain if you have one. Nothing on this site makes one for you.
- Payments
- Stripe: 2.9% + 30¢ on US cards, pays out in two days, Apple Pay and Google Pay included. Also sells a card reader for the merch table at shows, as does Square.
- Code
- GitHub holds the store’s files and their history. You will rarely open it.
- Hosting
- Cloudflare: the free plan serves the pages without limit and allows a business. (Vercel’s free plan is for non-commercial sites.)
- Domain
- Registered in your name at a registrar you can log in to: Cloudflare Registrar (at cost, about $11 a year for .com), Porkbun, Namecheap. Who owns yours today: ICANN Lookup.
- Mailing list
- Outside the store, so it survives a move: Buttondown (free to 100), Mailchimp (free to 500), or listmonk if you host your own.
- Postage
- Pirate Ship: free, USPS and UPS at commercial rates. Put the tracking number in the admin when you post; it is what wins a dispute.
- Fulfilment
- When the closet fills up, a partner that connects to any store: ShipBob, ShipMonk, or a local one. Hello Merch, Merch Mountain and Bingo Merch pack for bands and run their own storefronts, if you want to hand the whole thing off.
- Records and tapes
- A second table, not the table: Bandcamp (10% plus processing, fans already there) and Subvert (a co-operative, 0% fee, physical goods still to come).
- A coding agent
- For anything the admin doesn’t do: Claude Code, Codex or Cursor, about $20 for the month you build in. The prompts are written.
Tools on this site
- Start here
- From nothing to a live store: every click in order.
- Deploying
- What Cloudflare asks, and what to do when it goes wrong.
- Costs
- What each store costs you at your size, from the vendors’ published rates.
- Checklist
- Own the exits in an hour: the domain, the exports, the list, the pixels. Printable.
- Shopify export
- The admin imports it directly. This page turns it into the product file if you’d rather work in the files.
- Your own tickets
- Sell tickets to your own shows for the price of card processing, with a door you work yourself; and a page for the venue.
- Staying safe, both ways
- Chargebacks, refunds and fraud: what protects you, and what protects the person who bought from you.
- Getting merch made
- What a shirt really costs, choosing a printer, paying the chain properly.
- Taking crypto
- One toggle that costs less than cards, and the honest number for how few people will use it.
- The long read
- Own your table: the whole ladder, one rung at a time, with the master prompt for your agent. Read the code.
Your page here
- Claim your page
- Verify your store, correct it, point us at a new one, or remove your listing. A person reads each one and replies, usually within a few days.
- Publish your table
- A small feed file so any fan tool reads your store without scraping. The store above publishes it for you. Publish it and claim your page, and you’re marked “verified by the band”.
- Our crawler
- How it reads stores, and how to ask it to stop.
- Local shops
- A record shop that sells on Discogs can be followed by the people near it. If that’s you and you’d rather not, say so.
